Does Red Light Therapy Really Work?

Does Red Light Therapy Really Work?

So, What Is Red Light Therapy?

In October of 1995, NASA began experimenting in space with red light therapy on plant growth. During these experiments, astronauts noticed the red light did things like accelerate the healing of a scratch on their hand or resolve a wort. This led researchers to dig a little deeper, discovering that red light therapy used deliberately as a type of photomedicine, penetrated cellular tissue and caused cells to work at a higher level.

How Does Red Light Therapy Work?

It acts on the mitochondria or the “powerhouse” of your body’s cells. As the red light penetrates, it produces a biochemical effect deep in the cells that strengthens mitochondria, improving its function. This triggers the cells to boost adenosine triphosphate (ATP) which carries the energy molecule in cells. As cells work more efficiently, skin repair is accelerated and new cell growth is promoted.

Is It Safe?

Red Light Therapy is widely used, non-invasive and doesn’t damage the skin like cancer-causing ultraviolet (UV) light from sun or tanning. One caveat: it should be avoided by anyone with photo-sensitizing medical conditions like lupus or anyone taking photo-sensitizing medications. You should also avoid RLT if you have open wounds or lesions on your skin. When in doubt, ask your doctor or dermatologist.

What Are The Benefits?

Improved Wound Healing, A Reduction Of Stretch Marks & Scarring, Reduced Fine Lines, Wrinkles & Age Spots, An Improvement In Inflammatory Conditions Like Eczema, Psoriasis and Rosacea, Enhanced Hair Growth When Used On The Scalp, Improved Circulation, Increased Collagen and Elastin Production, Improved Facial Texture and Tone, A Boost In Elasticity and Laxity And A Reduction In Overall Cellular Inflammation. Wow, right?

How Often Should I Use It?

2-3x week is a good baseline. But the exciting news is red light therapy really can't be overdone. So, if you have lofty skin goals, go wild. It takes mere minutes;  while you, say, binge watch The Diplomat (so good!) on Netflix. Cleanse skin and apply toning mist. Then make like a glazed donut and apply a thick layer (3-4 pumps, seriously) of Retinoic: red light's perfect partner. By the ad break, you'll have skin that glows like Rick James' aura and that thick layer of serum? It will be absorbed completely by your thirsty skin.

How Long Does It Take To See Results?

Most people see an immediate improvement after the first session. Expect more dramatic results to build after 6-8 weeks, as your skin rounds out a cycle or two of its natural 30 day renewal process. But honestly, the sky is the limit because results are both immediate and cumulative.
